There once was a house

On a gray-gilded hill

The clouds were all white

And the grass was all silver

Inside of that house

There lived a small cat

Their paws were light ash

Their fur was dark black

And the only other color

The cat had ever seen

Was the color of their eyes -

A faded, muted green

They looked at their window

To try and get it’s fill

But there was nothing to see

On that gray-gilded hill

Every day, to the window

Every night, straight to bed

And the cat always wondered

If their life was but death

One day, Cat heard a knock

A gentle knocking on its door

And then they saw something

They had never seen before

A letter, the letter, dropped to the floor

Cat could just swear

That the envelope was white

But, looking at it closer

They thought, “Not quite…”

And the seal on its front

The drippy, bumpy wax

Was a very vibrant color

Unknown to poor Cat

They opened up the letter

Sat upon their bed

Reading out the sudden message

And this is what it said:

“Dear Cat, you’ve seen the world

In black and in white

The stale white of day

And the lonely black of night

But now you must find

All the hues that have fled

Godspeed and good luck

With my love, Uncle Ted.

Oh, and P.S…that seal is called red.”

Cat jumped up in excitement

The best they’d felt in years

And it seemed the cloudy sky

Outside had disappeared

They picked up a satchel

To put upon their back

They didn’t take much

But this is what they packed:

A can, some tissues, a bag of sweet grapes

A towel, a teddy, and a lovely, warm cape

They left in early morning

The day was cold but fair

Setting off that fateful Tuesday

To find what once was theirs
